EC to recommend unconditional launching of accession negotiations

The European Commission will recommend that the European Union opens accession negotiations with Albania without any conditions this time, newspapers reported over weekend and today quoting their western counterparts. Newspapers have secured a draft document produced by the EC, which states that “reform of the public administration [has been] consolidated, with a view to enhancing its professionalism and de-politicization”. It also adds that “further actions were taken to reinforce the independence, efficiency, and accountability of judicial institutions, particularly through advancing in the implementation of a comprehensive justice reform”. The European Commission does, however, warn that “continued, concrete, and tangible results in the re-evaluation of judges and prosecutors will be decisive for Albania’s further progress”. As per the same document, the Albanian authorities should make further progress in the fight against organized crime, corruption and drug trafficking. As confirmed by the office of EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, EU Commissioner on European Neighbourhood Policy & Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn and she will be in Tirana tomorrow to deliver the report to the top Albanian leaders, as part of a tour of visits to the Western Balkans.
